Insights into the Marine Deep Biosphere: cdebi
Tools for Science Writers and Journalists

The Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI) is a multi-institutional collaboration of scientists seeking to better understand the biology of the deep subseafloor environment. As part of the education and outreach efforts for C-DEBI, Metcalf Institute partnered with John Kirkpatrick, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, to develop scientifically-vetted background information about deep subseafloor biosphere research. With each devoted to a separate research theme, these backgrounders (linked below) are intended to assist journalists in their efforts to understand and report on these complex but broadly significant findings.

Theme 1: Activity in the Deep Subseafloor Biosphere

Theme 2: Extent of Life

Theme 3: The Limits of Life

Theme 4: Evolution and Survival

Metcalf Institute also worked with the C-DEBI Research Coordination Network at the University of Southern California and the project’s Science Advisors to develop the searchable C-DEBI experts list, below, intended for use by journalists, science writers, public information officers and other members of the C-DEBI community.
